Best of Jerusalem Marathon 2016

The sixth International Jerusalem Marathon was run on Friday morning.

The loudspeakers from the starting line near the Knesset

made for an early morning wake-up in Jerusalem, Israel.

As the 2600 full marathon runners raced by,

one man waved,

some were already feeling the inclines,

and others not yet.

International and varied participants ran

along with Batman and Superman.

As every year, entertainers were at the starting line

wearing the colors of the runners’ countries and cheering.

Again the finish line for the full marathon was in

Gan Sacher, Sacher Park, with hundreds lined up to watch.

But there were other races, a half marathon, 10k and more.

30,000 people were entered in the races

and many more times that number supported the runners.

In the park loud music blasted,

racers drummed,

or just fooled around.

The day started out cool and cloudy,

but the sun came out and the weather warmed up.

The marathon is so much more pleasant without rain.

The mud holes were appreciated by at least one young man,

but they were nothing compared to the first marathon.

The three winners of the men’s full marathon came from Kenya

and as usual were interviewed by press.

Their times were amazing when you consider the Jerusalem terrain

with its physically challenging hills.

However,

the participants of the shorter races were also impressive,

as for some this event is a chance to get up and out,

and show their abilities, not their disabilities.

Large sums were raised for dozens of good causes,

by organizations and supporters of all ages,

and the international goodwill – priceless.

Coming into the park after their shorter races were 27,000 runners.

Congratulations

and smiles,

runners in larger groups,

or smaller ones,

or going to the finish line alone,

filled the Jerusalem streets.

As I was finally heading home,

the 10k walkers were nearing the finish line,

very proud of their accomplishment.

But, my favorite from this marathon,

with 30,000 runners from all over the world,

was Bruno, from Brazil, the Tourist of the Week.

Bruno not only smiled and slowed to wave during the race,

but later shared that he and Adriana got engaged

at the Kotel, the Western Wall, before Shabbat.

Mazel tov to Adriana and Bruno,

and to all those who made this year’s event special,

bigger and better, even if it is exhausting.

For all those upset with street closings who stayed home,

sorry.

I have seen them all and the half marathon before.

I think it is great so many of thousands also now appreciate,

the real Jerusalem streets.

Jerusalem Marathon and More

The US Vice-President went home.

The Israeli President went to Russia to meet Putin.

The flags for the Romanian President’s visit are gone,

but othere flags are lining the Jerusalem, Israel streets.

Flags and more flags are flying in gusting winds,

flags ready for the Jerusalem Marathon.

25,000 runners of all ages,

2500 of them from out of country are expected.

Day and night,

they have been seen training for the Friday morning race.

Weather has been cold, then hot and sunny, and then rainy,

all in the same day, the same hour!

But come Friday, major streets will be closed,

and schools, businesses, even the Israel Museum,

will not open as usual.

Large posters at Gan Sacher, Sacher Park,

have been put up near the starting line,

and another is at Jaffa Gate.

One finish line next to the park

has been ready for days.

The Sport and Health fair leading up to race time,

is at the Jerusalem Arena this year.

Meanwhile, there is another marathon,

the Purim marathon keeping many families busy.

Purim ‘lead up’ has been well under way,

with an extra Adar leap-year month to prepare.

Azza Zazza promises megilat Esther reading every hour on Friday,

March 25, for Jerusalem’s Shushan Purim celebrations.

Buses display banners of Purim festivals.

The streets are not as crowded,

and Mamilla Mall is not bustling as usual.

But it is still the weather that keeps me inside,

first dust, then rain.

Today’s rain should clean the air for the runners.

I was glad to be out in the Old City as the sun was setting,

to find men dancing at Kotel, the Western Wall,

singing and live music to dedicate a new Torah scroll.

Life goes on in spite of the security situation.

Sports and Purim and if that is not enough,

there is a Bach Festival this week,

with music, events, lectures and art,

over several days in multiple locations.

These new tape art designs are for Purim?

The Jerusalem Marathon route goes by this intersection,

but being so close to the finish line, I doubt most people will notice.

18 New Photos of Arab Girls

Another International Women’s Day during Israel Apartheid Week,

while each year the IAW hate-fest gets longer and louder,

not much else has changed.

Hanin Zoabi can still yell about

“occupation and injustice” from inside the Knesset.

She can shout that Israel is a Jewish state and not democratic.

She rants against the Israeli government

and retains her seat in the Knesset

and her right to free speech.

Does she not see her freedoms as an Arab woman in Israel,

as compared to females in the rest of Arab world?

There are not just female Arab Knesset members,

but Arab – Muslim girls visit the Knesset on a regular basis,

an Arab girl can work as a guide,

while an Arab female Knesset member speaks with the media.

When seven new Qadis were sworn in at Beit Hanasi,

the Israeli President’s official residence,

females were not among the new Islamic Sharia judges,

but Muslim women and girls were invited and attended.

Women in Saudi Arabia are still not allowed to drive a car.

Sometimes new female drivers are chaperoned,

but in Jerusalem, Israel,

I have seen a female driving instructor wearing a hijab.

Life is not always a day in the park,

but many like to sit and enjoy the new Teddy Fountain.

Arab girls can walk about freely.

They can be found

with cell phones texting inside an office building,

or alone on the street.

As this couple was crossing busy King George Street,

there were two Israeli girls in uniform on the other side,

who did not even notice they were there.

Arab women and girls can be found,

shopping in the Machane Yehuda Market, the shuk,

in Talpiot, in groups

or alone,

day or night,

in the stores of Mamilla Mall,

or along Jaffe Street in town.

Photos of Arab girls,

walking to Jaffa Gate and the Old City,

or eating in a cafe on Ben Yehuda Mall,

are normal, every day, no-news occurrences.

I have too many photos to share.

But, these are three all-time favorites:

This woman and other Arab women receiving diplomas for

their advanced graduate degrees in science at Hebrew University.

This woman taking a selfie at the Western Wall Plaza,

while hundreds of IDF soldiers waited for a special ceremony.

And this one,

oh, those Arab girls.

Five years have gone by since my first post,

and Arab women and girls in the Middle East

still have more freedom in Israel.

March 8, 2021 – the young woman who asked to have her photo removed let me take it when she was a Knesset tour guide. Today she is serving as an Israeli diplomat in a foreign country.
