Passover Scenes in Jerusalem

Passover in Jerusalem, Israel, as always, was like nowhere else.

10 rockets rained in from Gaza to the south and Sderot.

In Jerusalem, it rained dirt for a short while; what a mess for the cars!

But it cleaned the air and with much less traffic,

everyone was breathing easier.

This 24/6 store was closed for seven days,

and bread bakeries were shut tight.

A small, peaceful protest about the Temple Mount

at Jaffa Gate was not newsworthy.

Arab protesters and rock throwers got all the media attention,

but I was impressed with this police officer,

armed for serious crowd control – with a bull horn.

I was not the only one this year to come to the Jewish Quarter after the big

Birkat Kohanim, the Priestly Blessing at the Kotel, the Western Wall.

Last year was such a mob scene.

Popcorn and fresh juice were for sale on the route through the Old City.

Bagel shops were closed,

but the shwarma bar was open, with its tables covered.

The image of the new  Hurva Synagogue

against a blue sky is always impressive.

People were dressed in so many ways for the holiday,

Many Ethiopians gathered around their leaders,

who stood under their colorful umbrellas.

But theirs were not the only umbrellas on the Kotel plaza.

With so many people converging in a small area,

the streets outside of the Old City were blocked to cars.

While inside the Old City roads were also blocked,

these young Arab men making a delivery had no trouble getting by,

and this Arab woman also walked freely.

However, I was not allowed to use my regular exit.

We had to walk all the way around.

Look at the nice view of Jordan in the distance,

for nothing is very far away in Israel.

These people stopped to enjoy the view.

Another barrier,

but this time ice cream trucks were ready for tired tourists.

And all day every day, tourists kept coming.

but this car got through.

Finally outside the walls, a picture perfect time,

that rock throwers did not ruin for the hundreds of thousands

of visitors who came from around the world.

There was as always too much to do and too little time,

and too much to eat.

And this year some major supermarkets ran out of eggs.

Big news,

that the new Waldorf-Astoria Hotel opened its doors to the public,

but  that will have to wait for next time…

must go bake some cookies now before all the kids go home.

Sounds of Music on Jerusalem’s Old City Streets

There seems to be a constant stream of festivals in Jerusalem, Israel,

and this week is the annual music festival, Sounds of the Old City.

Nighttime music festivals are not the best ops for photos,

but some of these backdrops and stages are indeed spectacular.

Starting outside of Jaffa Gate,

image music, photo Old City music, picture music at night

the Na’am Ensemble was the opening act,

image girl singing, photo Jerusalem music, picture music

followed by a performance by Gole Anar.

Most of the names of the folk singers are not familiar to Anglo audiences.

On the stage next to The Tower of David, the Alaev Family

included family members dressed in colorful Bukharan clothing.

There were over 11 mapped out performance locations,

the Dilijan Ensemble was #4 along the route.

A few locations were standouts,

like #3, down in the Tower of David moat!

The show with the music of Taverna band, hosted by Shimon Parnas,

was almost secondary to the site.

performed in the Open Cardo as the opening act.

  What a stage!

Also, students from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance

were playing along the route.

Signs showed the way through the Muslim Quarter

and the shuk, market,

but as usual I got lost.

They need more and better signs.

By a photo in the free information booklet (available in English, Hebrew and Arabic)

it seems that I saw Lelot HaMizrach and not the Sahara trio.

Finally, I ended up in Muristan Square where

the Hebrews of Dimona were belting out

some old US favorites from the Four Seasons that even got the attention of even the very young.

image cute child, picture night at Mamilla Mall

Not everyone out at night was interested in live music,

image Palestinian woman, photo Arab girl, picture Arab girl

and some were shopping in Mamilla Mall.

Thousands and thousands of people,

from around the world were on the Jerusalem, Israel streets.

But if there is no violence, just sounds of music, then it is not news.

Be warned though, that not only is the Old City closed to vehicles,

but some streets in Old City were even blocked for pedestrians,

like the street by the new still not quite open Waldorf-Astoria.

Sounds of the Old City runs from March 31 – April 3, 7-11:00 pm.

Jerusalem Cinema City Open

Hezbollah is escalating its activity near Syrian border.

The Israeli navy stopped an Iranian rocket shipment headed for Gaza,

from Syria around to Sudan, under a Panamanian flag!

Spending so much time and effort on terror makes sense to them?

Government foreign service workers are striking.

Hundreds of thousands of haredi protesters went home.

The Sandstorm from Egypt is finally over.

The Zipora Express restaurant was quite full and busy.

Unfortunately, not all the escalators were working.

I did a lot of walking up and down these steps,

but one woman was there with a walker.

So many lights, colors and busy stuff,

anyone with a seizure disorder should beware.

Actually, you could probably develop one if you walk around long enough.

Jerusalem, Israel, ‘city of lions’ has a new attraction.

Lights, action, camera, but for now, the theaters are closed on Shabbat.
