Erev Yom Kippur in Jerusalem

What perfect timing for Clean Up the World Day!

If there was one thing that everyone agreed upon this week,

it certainly was not what to do in Syria or Iran,

but emptying the trash dumpsters

after a long three-day holiday weekend!

Cats in Jerusalem,

The cats, however, enjoyed the over-filled bins’

and contents that spilled on to so many streets

Sounds of song and early morning prayers filled the streets.

I did not get to the piyut festival this year,

man signing with backup live music

but last year the traditional melodies

could even be heard outside on King George Street.

This is the season of honey and apples, sweet foods,

and large quantities of delicacies at all the holiday meals.

Rimonim, pomegranates, are still piled high in the markets.

As Yom Kippur approaches,

once again the custom of the Kaparot ceremony

with its use of live chickens is a topic of controversy.

these rubber chickens were on display.

But my favorite during the week before Yom Kippur,

is the bus sign with my wish for everyone,

may you be “Sealed for a good year.”

“Well over the fast”

is what they say Down Under for Yom Kippur.

 Traffic is increasing,

and tourists are arriving on the Jerusalem, Israel, streets.

The holiday season has started.

Signs of Rosh Hashana in Jerusalem

The days are getting shorter and the nights are cooler.

Summer is coming to an end.

All around there are signs of the new year.

The first day of school is a big deal in Israel,

the Prime Minister, the President and

a long list of politicians get involved.

Lining the Jerusalem, Israel, streets,

are new signs announcing the new school year,

New school year starts in Jerusalem

“There’s nothing like the education in Jerusalem,

good luck to us all in school.”

Jerusalem streets photo, posting announcements

Here is a new, special place to post community announcements.

I can’t wait to see how it will be used.

Not sure why this sign is still up,

as Maccabiah events are long over, so there is no need for parking now.

Jerusalem sacred music festival

The Jerusalem Sacred Music Festival attracted extra attention this year.

It certainly was not a good sign that one performer,

Selif Keita, had to cancel due to threats.

If he had come he would see what is really happening

 on the Jerusalem streets.

Jerusalem music, end of summer concert

There were signs all over for many musical performances,

like this one is for an end of summer concert in Kikar Safra, Safra Square.

These fresh limes on the tree almost ready to pick

has to be one of my favorite signs of the Rosh Hashana season.

It is really coming soon this year,

too soon for some of us,

but mountains of rimonim, pomegranates, are a sure sign that of the new year is almost here.

They even appear above the streets on this new sign

wishing all a Shanah tovah in Jerusalem,

a very good new year to all.

Jerusalem’s New Water Park

Teddy Park was under construction for such a long time.

Jerusalem photo, construction, JStreet, parks

Even the white construction fences surrounding the area

were covered in graffiti that looked old.

Across from the walls of the Old City,

there were times that huge construction equipment would dig,

and times this area of Mitchell Park was covered up and quiet.

Finally the opening of Teddy Park was announced,

and massive landscaping that appeared overnight.

Then it was closed to the public for weeks.

But the new fountain was up and going in time for Khutzot Hayotzair.

Former Mayor Teddy Kolek left a big imprint on Jerusalem.

Compared to the Hollywood Walk of Fame,

the Jerusalem Walk of Fame is tiny.

But the hands of former mayor Teddy Kolek

have reached out to touch a new generation in Jerusalem, Israel.

This old abandoned area of what was ‘No Man’s Land’ has come alive.

Not exactly a major water park by world standards,

but Teddy Park is free and now open to the public.

Winter Update:

Fountain will only be on at 20:00 and 21:00 with water & light show.
