Jerusalem Prepares for Season of Celebrations – the Yoms

Jerusalem Prepares for Season of Celebrations – the Yoms

The Passover and Easter celebrations are now over.

However, the spring holiday season in Jerusalem, Israel,

is far from over.

As soon as those Passover dishes are put away,

it is time for the roller coaster of emotional  ‘Yoms’:

Yom HaShoah,

Holocaust Remembrance Day,

Yom HaZikaron,

the Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror,

which is immediately followed by

Yom HaAtzmaut,

Israel’s Independence Day,

and this year is a big 50 for

Yom Yerushalayim,

Jerusalem Day.

As soon as the celebration of freedom ends

Lord and Lady Gainsford in Jerusalem

international guests gather at Yad Vashem,

for the official opening ceremony for Yom HaShoah,

to remember the 6,000,000 Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

Each year 6 survivors are honored with the lighting of a memorial flame.

Here the honorees posed for a photo before the televised ceremony,

each with their own incredible story.

The lights on the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza

serve as a hauntingly beautiful background at sunset.

Taps is sounded by a lone IDF trumpeter,

and the honor guard and all assembled stand as the Israeli flag is lowered.

Flames and survivors on Yom Hashoah Jerusalem

Six survivors lit flames, aided by either a child or grandchild,

with some of the young relatives currently serving in the IDF.

The next day, there is another ceremony, less well-known,

which is held in the Knesset.

Israeli flags were featured on the Knesset pins given out to guests.

Again, six survivors lit memorial flames.

This survivor is 100 years old.

The President and Prime Minister attended and spoke,

and the Chief Rabbis added traditional Jewish memorial prayers.

In this televised ceremony as well,

a short video of the survivors’ harrowing stories was shown.

Speaker of Knesset Yuli Edlestein at Remembrance Day ceremony

At the ceremony, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein,

led the reading of a list of names of those who did not survive.

The Prime Minister, President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,

and members of Knesset, all added names of family members

to the list of those who were murdered,

“To every person there was a name.”

However,

from the retelling of darkness in the Chagall Hall of the Knesset,

one exits to the sight of the blooming roses in the Rose Garden.

Along with with flowers in bloom,

the Yoms are a time of blue & white Israeli flags,

huge ones down sides of buildings,

tiny ones blowing from car windows,

big ones on schools,

and small ones on a cafe table.

Signs are up for celebrating Yom HaAtzmaut,

Israel’s 69 years of Independence,

but first there will be Yom HaZikaron,

a time to remember those who gave their lives

Jerusalem and Israeli flags are flying above the Jerusalem streets,

Jerusalem 50 years mew white flags

along with this new white flag,

which marks 50 years of the liberation of Jerusalem,

Hotels are booked out

and flights are hard to come by,

as tens of thousands plan to join in the celebrations of

Yom Yerushalayim,

filling the Jerusalem streets with more flags

and joyous days  of celebrations.

Favorites from Jerusalem Marathon

Favorites from Jerusalem Marathon

The International Jerusalem Winner Marathon 2017

was run on Friday morning, March 17.

The Jerusalem streets were closed and traffic was blocked

Jerusalem marathon runners

as 30,000 runners participated in the full marathon

and a number of other shorter races.

As the full marathon runners were going by

full marathon runners Jerusalem marathon

at least one man on the right wanted attention,

Jerusalem marathon full marathon runners

as did the two runners in tams and kilts.

Over 60 countries were represented,

but I only saw one French flag.

Women were in the crowd running the full marathon.

Jerusalem marathon 2017

Tens of thousands ran through the streets,

as the route looped around and through the Old City.

Last year’s #1 was again #1 this year.

Jerusalem Marathon winner

After kissing the ground,

full marathon winner Shadrack Kipkogey was congratulated by

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who was dressed for a 10 K run.

I took 500 photos and it was hard to decide which ones to share.

Jerusalem marathon

But thousands of selfies were taken at the starting line

Jerusalem marathon 2017

and at the finish line.

One of my favorite photos and stories:

I posted a photo of a family from South Africa

dressed in red on Facebook at night after the race,

Jerusalem marathon runners from South Africa

and by morning all the names had been tagged.

Water stations were located along the route,

Bottles of water lined up for runners at Jerusalem marathon

plus this one where runners re-entered

Gan Sacher, Sacher Park, after their race.

Tens of thousands were in the park

enjoying music

and the activities provided.

Jerusalem marathon entertainment

There was new entertainment at the starting line,

Jerusalem Marathon shalva

but many participants were so excited they hardly noticed.

Jerusalem marathon

Just getting to the starting line took a long time,

because of security and  crowds

walking anywhere took longer than usual.

The 10 K race had 3 different starting times and groups

for the thousands who participated.

Brightly colored shirts from dozens of charity organizations

were worn by thousands of runners,

and this woman who walks for Shalva,

 was back again this  year.

Remembe I commented how I never saw the mayor running?

Jerusalem marathon Nir Barkat starting at 10 K

Well, this year I saw him at the start

Jerusalem Marathon Mayor Nir Barkat at 10 K finish

and again at the end of the race at the finish line.

Jerusalem marathon Moshe Lion

I even spotted the man who wants to be the next mayor

at both the starting and finish lines.

The numbers attending the Jerusalem Marathon

have grown so large it is hard to find family or friends.

One of the reasons the numbers have grown

Family run starting line in Jerusalem marathon

is the participation in a special Family Race.

At 10:30 am, 6000 were waiting to start the last race of the day.

I did not stay for the starting gun,

as I was racing back to the 10 K finish line.

But the family members I was looking for?

I did not see any of them!

While walking home, I passed those taking

Three girls completing 10 K walk in Jerusalem marathon

a slower pace nearing the finish line.

Some streets opened early to traffic this year.

Barefoot Rick running Jerusalem marathon without shoes

And there was Barefoot Rick,

still smiling as he finished up another marathon.

Not sure if this was 84 or 85, of the over 100 marathons

he has run without shoes to raise money for charity.

Tens of thousands ran through the Jerusalem streets,

millions of dollars were raised for charity.

There are people who still hate it,

but look for an even bigger and better one next year.

The date is set for the next Jerusalem Marathon:

March 9, 2018.

By then I had better get an app for my phone

so I can know how many kilometers I walked.

It could be way more than a full marathon.

5 Special Israeli Women on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day.

Photos of Arab women went viral in 2011.

Then in 2012, I published photos of Arab girls

that just keep going and going.

Muslim girls in Jerusalem Israel shopping

Arab girls still can be found shopping in Jerusalem

on just about any day in most neighborhoods.

But this year I would like to focus on a few special women.

MK Rachel Azaria is using her position in the Knesset,

Rachel Azaria in Knesset committee room

with the assistance of various women’s groups,

to help working conditions and family life.

Yesterday another committee meeting was held on issues

including extended parental leave and allowing fathers to

take time off on the birth of child without fear of losing their jobs.

On my way out of the Knesset I passed

Arab students in Knesset on tour

an Arab school group starting a Knesset tour.

Arab girls going to visit Knesset

Muslim girls were on their way to the Knesset also.

I have meet some impressive Arab women and girls,

but most have not wanted their photo and names shared.

 Perhaps times are slowly changing,

because seated next to President Reuven Rivlin

on a teen panel at a Ynet education conference,

was Norhaan, who asked a question of the Israeli President.

held at a press conference at the King David Hotel.

Justice Minister Ayelet Sheked answered questions

from American Jewish leaders.

Both women have promising futures in Israeli politics,

but one woman stands out for my special recognition

on this International Women’s Day,

Karnit Flug.

Bank of Israel president Karmit Flug at Jerusalem Press Club annual report

Remember how they said no man could replace

Stanley Fischer as President of the Bank of Israel?

Karnit Flug was interim head,

and was then appointed to the top position.

Each year she presents a report on the Israeli economy,

and each year she is more impressive.

Slowly banking is getting better

and things are changing.

Women in Israel are making a positive difference.
