After Yom Kippur War 40 Years in Jerusalem

The official memorial for those fallen in

the Yom Kippur War 40 years ago

is being broadcast live on the radio.

Memorial for dead

This photo was taken at a private ceremony,

the young man was speaking in honor of his grandfather.

I think it is fitting image to remember those fallen during the Yom Kippur War

even though the grandfather was not directly involved.

Also, on this 20th anniversary of Oslo Accord

to remember how many of Israel’s best have died.

But, there is little time for sadness,

 Sukkot is coming.

Sukkot preparations in Jerusalem.

All around Jerusalem, Israel, preparations have begun.

Sukah on porch

Look up on balconies,

around in backyards,

and on top of cars;

there are signs of the Sukkot holiday.

After Yom Kippur,

Jerusalem school is out.

it is a busy time getting ready for more holidays.

Schools are out,

a good time for grandparents to give a helping hand.

Signs of Rosh Hashana in Jerusalem

The days are getting shorter and the nights are cooler.

Summer is coming to an end.

All around there are signs of the new year.

The first day of school is a big deal in Israel,

the Prime Minister, the President and

a long list of politicians get involved.

Lining the Jerusalem, Israel, streets,

are new signs announcing the new school year,

New school year starts in Jerusalem

“There’s nothing like the education in Jerusalem,

good luck to us all in school.”

Jerusalem streets photo, posting announcements

Here is a new, special place to post community announcements.

I can’t wait to see how it will be used.

sign Jerusalem streets

Not sure why this sign is still up,

as Maccabiah events are long over, so there is no need for parking now.

Jerusalem sacred music festival

The Jerusalem Sacred Music Festival attracted extra attention this year.

It certainly was not a good sign that one performer,

Selif Keita, had to cancel due to threats.

If he had come he would see what is really happening

 on the Jerusalem streets.

Jerusalem music, end of summer concert

There were signs all over for many musical performances,

like this one is for an end of summer concert in Kikar Safra, Safra Square.

These fresh limes on the tree almost ready to pick

has to be one of my favorite signs of the Rosh Hashana season.

It is really coming soon this year,

too soon for some of us,

but mountains of rimonim, pomegranates, are a sure sign that of the new year is almost here.

They even appear above the streets on this new sign

poster Shanah tovah, sign new year, image rosh Hashanah

wishing all a Shanah tovah in Jerusalem,

a very good new year to all.

After the Holidays, What Now?

For months people have said “after the chagim

well, the time has now arrived and the holidays are over.

Yesterday the winter session of the Knesset began in Jerusalem, Israel,

only to shut down a few hours later, to prepare for elections in January.

Knesset

However, the lights were still on in the building when I went to sleep.

Over 40 rockets fired from Gaza fell already this week in the South.

There is the nuclear threat from Iran.

No one knows what will happen next on the Jerusalem streets,

but there certainly are many cameras on hand to record it.

Muslim Quarter

Sukkot holiday crowds pushed through the Old City to the Kotel,

the Western Wall,  for Birchat Kohanim, the Priestly Blessing.

photographers Jerusalem

Photographers were ready for action in the crowded Muslim Quarter.

Serious cameras were there to get close-ups of the faces.

Thousands of smiling visitors posed for their moment.

There were so many phones out taking photos,

many were photos of the holiday crowds at the Kotel.

In the sukkah at Beit Hanasi, the President’s residence,

not only people posed for photos,

but even this dog stopped and posed.

There were children taking pictures

and official photos with President Shimon Peres as well.

Having your camera handy is a good thing,

mime

as you never know when you will need it on the Jerusalem streets.

Jerusalem parade

At the Jerusalem Parade, marchers took photos with and of the spectators.

Nigerian tourists

Who knew so many Nigerians were camera crazy?

Jerusalem streets are narrow,

a car on the corner can make it impossible for a truck to pass.

cars

This looked like possible trouble, so I took a photo of the scene.

Not everyone wants me to take their photos, that is for sure.

pose for camera

In fact, this man jumped out of his truck and started towards me!

I sure was relieved that all he wanted was for me to take his photo!

Most people are back to work.

School classes are in session until Hanukkah,

the universities start next week.

One might expect quiet streets,

but yesterday there were crowds and shofars and cameras

bar mitzvah

and drums for a bar mitzvah boy’s celebration.

Gotta love those Jerusalem streets,

where you never know what or who you will find.
