Pope Francis View from Notre Dame

Ever walk by something many times and not really notice?

Even with my camera always out and ready,

I had not really paid attention

to this building,

image St Louis Hospital

the Saint Louis French Hospital.

Its gates were opened recently for a few hours to the press.

fresco image, picture of art under paint

Damage from a broken water pipe revealed hidden art on the walls.

Built across from New Gate of the Old City in the 19th century,

Comte Marie Paul Amédée de Piellat, a French nobleman funded,

designed and decorated the building after World War I.

His frescoes

photo art in St Louis Hospital

were revealed to the public after years out of view,

that whole story  has been written up in many places.

But, though I have seen the Israeli Antiquities photos of these frescoes,

image Rabbanut kosher certificate

no one posted a photo of the Kosher certificate near the entrance.

This hospital run by the Sisters of St Joseph of Apparition is kosher.

There is no sukkah,

but 50 volunteers came from Germany to clean for Passover.

Arriving after the official tour had ended,

one of the two chaplains kindly showed me around.

Going through the nuns’ private upstairs sleeping quarters to the roof,

picture NOtre Dame Jerusalem Israel, photo where Pope is staying in Jerusalem

was a great view of Notre Dame where Pope Francis

will stay on his visit in Jerusalem, Israel.

By roof top, Notre Dame is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Too bad the patients at St Louis are much too ill to enjoy the views,

like this hidden oasis in back of the hospice.

I could have spent hours up there,

image Jerusalem, scenic view Jerusalem

with incredible views

of Jerusalem, Israel, from all directions.

When security is high, sharp shooters are posted on roof tops.

Ever wonder what that is like?

Now you know what they will see for Pope’s visit.

Too bad that streets will be cleared when Pope Francis arrives,

he will not see the real Jerusalem streets.

Pope Francis Preparations in Jerusalem

Pope Francis is on his way to the Middle East for a quick visit.

Before his arrival in Jerusalem, Israel,

signs have been posted in English

and Hebrew,

lots of signs,

and lots of Vatican flags.

Tens of thousands of tourists are expected,

including hundreds of journalists and photographers.

image Skorka, photo Skarka

Rabbi Abraham Skorka from Argentina, is a close friend of Pope Francis

going back more than 20 years.

They co-authored a book and anchored a TV show together

before Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio became Pope.

Skorka was involved in planning this Papal visit

to the Holy Land from its inception,

he said every detail has been carefully examined.

Special pieces from the Museum on the third floor were

brought down just for the Pope’ s Monday visit.

On Monday parking will be limited.

Streets will be closed.

Security and barriers are already up at Beit Hanasi, the President’s residence.

Preparations are so extensive that one woman told me she was already,

all poped out.

But my favorite,

Last Papal visit in May of 2009,

I really wanted to see the Pope Mobile,

but Pope Benedict arrived in a regular limo.

Will be interesting to see what will happen this time.

Jerusalem: Parades, Runners and New High Flyers

Many were worried that the three-day (Saturday night through Monday)

Lag B’Omer celebrations with their smoky medurot, large bonfires,

would cause worse air quality than the usual holiday pollution.

But thanks to Israeli basketball team Maccabi Tel Aviv

playing in the Euroleague Championship basketball final,

photo Israel basketball winners

so many people came inside to watch the exciting game

that there seemed to be a lot less smoke this year.

Maccabi Tel Aviv won in overtime!

The team has already been to the Prime Minister’s office

and is invited for a special reception today in the President’s House.

Lag B’Omer and International Museum Day were celebrated on Monday.

Thousands of school children on school holiday filled museums

which had no entrance fees in honor of Museum Day.

We had a great time in the Bloomfield Science Museum as always,

with lots of new exhibits and activities.

and Monday in Teddy Park near the Old City were just two of many events.

There was one unique event on Monday afternoon.

In a first-ever Run for Peace,

image Pat Farmer, photo runners near Jaffa Gate,

Australian ultra-marathon runner Pat Farmer (in the blue shirt)

and a few of his supporters arrived at the end of his 1500-kilometer run from Lebanon.

After running around 80 kilometers a day,

athlete Pat Farmer’s advice was to “put one foot in front of the other.”

Following a small press conference at Jaffa Gate,

image Australian ambassador,

Australian Ambassador Dave Sharma told another gathering in honor

of Farmer at the King David Hotel how proud Australia is

to support sports and all efforts for peace.

All was not sports and parades.

The week-long International Writers Festival opened in Mishkenot Sha’ananim.

But the real action was found outside,

just down the road from these two venues.

People were in the air, flying high

after Mayor Nir Barkat cut the ribbon of the new Skate Park Jerusalem.

The large rink is located in a section of the Liberty Bell Park.

Though some may not think of this as popular sport,

hundreds of people from all over Israel came for the opening,

and others watched as the best riders from all over Israeli showed their moves.

While the runners raced along the Jerusalem streets without getting a second glance,

and the parades stopped traffic for a bit,

this Skate Rink is really something!
