Hanukkah and Holiday Time in Jerusalem

In Jerusalem, Israel, as December begins

the holiday season gets going.

These holiday streets lights are up

and new signs of Hanukkah

are everywhere:

some with neighborhood activities

and this series of signs with holiday treats to eat.

in Machane Yehuda Market, the shuk’

and in Jerusalem bakeries for weeks.

But one of my favorite holiday foods are

Strawberries for Hanukkah in Jerusalem Israel Machane Yehuda market

those big red, delicious strawberries

that are just coming into season.

In the shuk, they are for sale, but not yet piled high.

It is not only the Hanukkah season;

and outside in the front garden.

On Friday, while on the bus to the Old City,

we saw thousands of Muslims coming

Jerusalem, Lion's Gate on Friday afternoon prayer time.

from all directions for Friday prayers,

while at the same time

and holding signs.

It was a wonderful peaceful week in Jerusalem.

We will have to wait and see what will happen next.

But to end on a festive note,

one of my all time holiday favorites,

from two years ago,

is this wonderful sound and light projection,

on  Walls of the Old City.

Sigd and Shabbat Shalom

Sigd and Shabbat Shalom

Sigd, a holiday which is set on

the 29th of Hebrew month of Heshvan,

falls out on Shabbat this year.

A national holiday in Israel since 2008,

thousands of Ethiopian-Israelis celebrate

by coming to Jerusalem, Israel,

to the tayelet in Armon Hanetziv.

Kessim, religious elders, sit under umbrellas,

perhaps remembering the days in Ethiopia

when they went to the highest mountain to fast,

praying to one day return to Yerushalayim, to Zion.

Women can be seen praying,

and perhaps remembering life in Ethiopia,

and their arduous journey to Sudan and challenges in Israel.

Each year,

young women as well as men,

are serving in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Sigd was observed on Thursday this year,

so as not to have the celebrations interfere with Shabbat.

The reason the main celebration is on the tayelet

Shabbat Shalom from the Tayelet view of Old City Temple Mount

is that its elevation provides this, one of the best views

of the Old City and the Temple Mount.

Shabbat Shalom – Aliyah Day

Shabbat Shalom – Aliyah Day

Aliyah Day

was established in 2016 to honor Olim,

immigrants to Israel, for their contributions.

It was set for 7th day of the Hebrew month Marcheshvan,

near the Torah portion Lech Lecha, in which

G‑d promises the Land of Israel to Avram’s descendants.

Aliyah Day

A major celebration was held in Jerusalem, Israel.

I do not know who sent the invitations, how, or to whom.

But after clearing security, there was food,

Yom Aliyah in Jerusalem

and a show with music and dancing and

entertainment, and of course speeches,

Man in audience with small Israel i flag

to a diverse group of Olim in the audience.

We live near Tchernichowsky Street,

and there he was on one of the huge screens.

This is not the usual RJS  Shabbat Shalom greeting,

but instead of a pretty photo, I decided to

share a short clip of one impressive performance.
