18 New Signs of Spring in Jerusalem

Spring in Jerusalem, Israel.

One day it feels like winter and then the next day feels like summer.

These are signs of spring, besides the birds chirping before dawn.

After unusually heavy rains, the spring weeds have reached new heights.

A favorite sign of spring was in a Gan Ha’atzmaut, Independence Park, of a group of young children playing and the sounds of their laughter.

New signs have been posted for tourists, as this one near Yoel Salomon Street.

Another new festival for spring at the old Hansen House.

On Jaffa Road, the sun came out. Temperatures warmed. People left their jackets and sweaters at home and were wearing short sleeves.

Good Deeds Day programs were held in several locations. Hundreds of volunteers and organizations were honored at Heichel Shlomo.

While thousands more volunteers participated in a program at First Station.

The Tower of David new exhibit for spring,”The Mount” has new street posters.

A favorite any time, but especially at night, the Tower of David was venue for the Forbes Women Under 30 Summit gala opening event in Jerusalem.

The following day felt like spring in JVP Media Center for the Forbes Under 30 participants. Entrepreneurs, mostly women, from around the world gathered in Jerusalem to learn, network, and initiate innovative ideas. Photos HERE

The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem BLMJ has new signs for new exhibit. New ancient sites are constantly being discovered.

There are new story hours for free in municipal libraries. Special art tours and tours of Kikar Safra are being offered, some at noon in English.

A list of 40 communities hosting communal seder meals has been published.

New signs for Kosher for Passover food popped up all over Jerusalem this week. This butcher shop had new sign for its new location.

Kikar Safra, Jerusalem Municipal Square, had large signs for its holiday matzah baking.

In a large tent, tables were set up for public to make their own matzah.

Dozens of poles were ready to move the dough to be baked.

Four ovens were set up to bake the matzah quickly.

A woman asked for one, and received a matzah to take home.

A group of young boys prepared enough matzah to fill a large bag.

Each piece was inspected carefully to make sure it was good for Passover use.

Oops, this one did not make it.

Signs are up over Jerusalem streets for spring celebrations.

Passover, Easter, Orthodox Easter, Good Friday, Maundy, Ridvan Festival, Lailat al Bara’ah, Nabi Shu’eib, all these spring holiday fall in the same week this year.

March Madness Jerusalem Style

In the United States March Madness means the college basketball championship playoffs.

In Jerusalem, Israel, March Madness has a very different meaning.

First there is the weather, which is constantly changing and so hard to predict.

This year with heavy rainfalls, low lying areas are full of water days after a storm.

Outdoor activities have to be re-planned. One rainy afternoon we went to the Israel Museum.

Loved the sunset view from inside the museum.

March madness means Purim is coming, with costumes, treats of sweets, and parties galore.

Special Megillot Esther, scrolls with the story of Purim, are on display in the museum.

Of many sizes, from small to this large illuminated one, both of these stand out in the collection.

This case contains special noise makers that are used to block out the name of Haman as Megillat Esther is read at night and again in the morning of Purim.

Across the corridor from these noise makers and the Jewish holiday collections is a special exhibit on Rambam, Maimonides.

Thirteen handwritten, works of the Rambam are displayed in a dark room, in special cases, including this one from Germany, from 1355-56, written in ink, with tempre and gold leaf.

From the early 1300’s, a handwritten Guide of the Perplexed, also illustrated.

The Kaufmann Mishnah Torah, dated 1295-96, is also in the impressive collection.

From the calm of the Israel Museum, back to madness.

It is impossible to keep up with the number of international conferences.

Over 18,000 people from 183 countries were registered for Jerusalem innovation conference Our Crowd. The crowded halls and spaces of the Jerusalem International Conference Center were at times packed with people moving from speaker to event. The room for the panel on cannabis was closed after capacity was reached. The lines for Beyond Burger, a plant meat substitute, were just mad, hard to believe how long people waited while other food stations had no lines. I ate waffles, never got a bite of burger. State Comptrollers from Europe and Asia are meeting at an official gathering this week in Jerusalem. A delegation visited Beit Hanasi, the Israeli President’s Residence and received a brief tour of the gardens and its history before meeting with President Rivlin.

The Innovative TV Conference (intv) brought television executives from around the world to Jerusalem for two days at the YMCA on King David Street.

Overlapping for its first day with intv, the DIGITELL19, also was at the YMCA, before taking off to Mitzpe Ramon in the south, and then going to Tel Aviv.

One of the sessions at YMCA for DIGITELL19 was ‘Xtream Marketing’ presented by SodaStream’s Matti Yahav, Chief Marketing Officer. The conference sponsored by the Ministry of Strategic Affairs brought an international group of pro-Israel social activists together. I only took a few photos. The “secret sauce” for SodaStream, the 4 ‘Ps’ is here, but some of participants were also a secret, so I only posted a few on Facebook HERE.

Most of the conferences do not involve the real streets. However, the upcoming Israeli election is hard to avoid. A visit to the Israeli Elections Committee Logistic Center was interesting.

As messages from various political parties invade our phones and homes, in this building in Modiin Industrial Park in Shoham, the boxes for election polling stations are being packed.

Each box has everything down to the paper clips counted out and sealed. Work goes on 24/6 to be ready to deliver before the April election day.

Notice the new boxes being made to accommodate the 46 political parties, plus one blank ballot for a write-in option.

After the election 250 tons of paper will be recycled. No politics here, just posting the logistical madness.

But, before Purim, before elections….

The Jerusalem Winner Marathon is running on March 15th!

Runners are training on the streets. Landscaping and paving along route is going at a mad pace to finish before the 40,000 runners from 80 countries start to line up at 6:45 am.

Jerusalem schools are closed. Museums in the area are closed on Friday, as they are near the starting point of the marathon.

The Bloomfield Science Museum is closed on Friday for marathon, but in honor of PI day, on Thursday afternoon, is open and free.

Marathon direction signs are posted along the routes where Jerusalem streets will be closed from 5:00 am until after 1:00 pm.

March Madness Jerusalem style gets really going after the marathon.

For Purim one never knows what or who one will find on the Jerusalem, Israel streets.

This year the city has a long list of events planned all week.

The day Purim is over, the Passover marathon begins, from March Madness to Passover Panic.

9 New Photos of Arab Israeli Women

Time for something new!

What news and new photos to post for International Women’s Day?

In the past Israeli Apartheid Week was making headlines at the same time.

In honor of International Women’s Day, Israeli Apartheid was first posted eight years ago.

Women in Saudi Arabia can now drive a car. Haneen Zoabi is no longer running for the Knesset.

But otherwise that viral post with 24 photos of Arab women stands true.

The blog titled 15 Real Photos of Arab Girls is still going since March 2012.

In the last 3 years alone, those girls have received over 26,000 views.

And three years ago there was the blog called 18 New Photos of Arab Girls.

Those glorious palm trees at Kikar Safra, Jerusalem Municipal Hall, have been gone for over a year, but Arab girls and women still shop of Jaffa Road.

Women are represented at the top of the Israeli legal system. Both the past and present heads of the Supreme Court, as well as the Minister of Justice are women.

The Israeli Supreme Court has two women serving as justices besides President Esther Hayut.

This photo was taken on the day Hayut officially took her position.

Judges are sworn in at Beit Hanasi, the Israeli President’s Residence, including this group of new Qadis, Sharia Court Judges.

While Muslim women were in attendance, there was no female judge appointed that day.

These men entered an all-male Israeli Sharia Court System. Ayelet Shaked said she wanted females also, and a year later Hana Khatib was sworn in at Beit Hanasi.

Not many women were present at Beit Hanasi when Arab security and police conferred.

But women were the focus of this media conference on Israeli version of #MeToo in Tel Aviv.

So what else is new to share in honor of International Women’s Day?

This photo of shopping in a Jerusalem supermarket before Passover is not new.

However, the fact that more Arab men are going shopping in Mamilla Mall is new.

Arab women eating in Jerusalem restaurants is not new.

However, I still refrain from showing them clearly.

Unless they are in my face like this young women; I often wonder where she is today.

More young women are running, this was a Jerusalem Women’s Night Run. The Jerusalem Marathon is a week away, and when the rain clears participants are out running and training.

In the Israel Museum this old photo is displayed, part of the story of Heftizbah Babayoff and family, who arrived in Jerusalem by camel in the 1800’s, from Bukhara.

What a contrast with this young woman who was sitting near the walls of the Old City, working on her laptop computer.

Women have come a long way in Jerusalem, Israel.
