Jerusalem Formula Road Show

For two days the Jerusalem Formula 2014 Road Show

shut down some Jerusalem, Israel streets.

Naftali Bennett advised a group of visiting Vietnamese government officials,

if there are two Jews, there will be three opinions,

and for this event there certainly were different opinions.

The weather was warm and sky clear,

as the opening stretched an hour over scheduled time.

There is no special track in Israel for racing

and knowledge of race cars is limited,

Many do not know a Blu blue car

from another blue car.

But for the second year,

beautiful fast machines

were out near the Old City to impressive.

The track was not a loop like last year,

so it was easy at Tower of David

where cars turned around to take photos.

But I did get this car speeding up.

A big difference this year was that several young Israelis were featured:

one was Roy Nissany.

More Israeli flags were out this year.

Terry Grant not only smoked up the street with his spinning Hot Rod,

but got out, walked away, and then got back in the moving vehicle,

all without wearing a helmet.

And then there were the motorcycles,

flying over the streets

upside down

and sideways,

with riders doing amazing stunts,

as crowds lined the show areas.

Do we need to shut down streets before a holiday

(a summer event had to be postponed)

or any time for this spectacle?

I heard an American tourist say,

“Seems to me to be a lot of money and noise for not so much.”

As we walked the long way around because of barriers on the track,

she added that she was 66 years old,

and does not think the same way she did when she was 16.

Young people were excited and came out to see the cars,

thousands were out to see,

what was happening on the Jerusalem, Israel streets.

Mayor Nir Barkat and Eugene Kaspersky think motorsport history has been made in Jerusalem

and that it is great and an investment for the future,,

but many others disagree.

Now enough with cars,

it is time to prepare for Sukkot,

Jerusalem Summer Nights to September Days

Ah, in Jerusalem, Israel,

summer nights are usually cool and clear.

Not many were out riding on the newly-constructed bike paths,

but the music at First Station had crowds on their feet dancing.

There was a big welcome sign at the only entrance to the Jerusalem Beer Festival.

בירה the Hebrew word for “beer”‘ and “capital” is the same.

The annual event drew a protest from the Arab media this year.

Located in Gan Ha’atazmaut, Independence Park, is it possible

that little white circle in the bottom left,

could really be a danger?

These “Make an agreement with Abbas, not with Hamas'” signs

were in many more locations and more on people’s minds.

Days this past week were hot enough to make the cats lazy,

but the summer signs

were being replaced with lots of new ones

promoting education in Jerusalem,

as school children returned to their classrooms.

Adults took advantage of end of summer

at The Israel Museum.

In the Garden,

next to the Big Bambu, all lit up at night,

was the hugely popular Wine Festival,

where twenty wineries shared samples.

Not all of the samples were wine,

and not all were popular,

as tables were filled with these discarded orange shpritzes.

Usually the children’s wing and playground are busy places,

but not on the four nights of this festival.

Not to worry,

on the way home I saw that signs were already up for a new event

at the Jerusalem Theater, “24 hours of PIANOS,”

plus there is another free concert in Kikar Safra on 11th,

just part of what is happening

on the Jerusalem, Israel, streets this week.

Pope Francis Preparations in Jerusalem

Pope Francis is on his way to the Middle East for a quick visit.

Before his arrival in Jerusalem, Israel,

signs have been posted in English

and Hebrew,

lots of signs,

and lots of Vatican flags.

Tens of thousands of tourists are expected,

including hundreds of journalists and photographers.

Rabbi Abraham Skorka from Argentina, is a close friend of Pope Francis

going back more than 20 years.

They co-authored a book and anchored a TV show together

before Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio became Pope.

Skorka was involved in planning this Papal visit

to the Holy Land from its inception,

he said every detail has been carefully examined.

The steps at Heichel Shlomo got a power wash,

while inside,

in the hall where the Chief Rabbis will greet the Pope,

the current photo exhibit was carefully removed.

Special pieces from the Museum on the third floor were

brought down just for the Pope’ s Monday visit.

On Monday parking will be limited.

Streets will be closed.

Security and barriers are already up at Beit Hanasi, the President’s residence.

Preparations are so extensive that one woman told me she was already,

all poped out.

But my favorite,

in preparation for the Pope,

Paris Fountain

was having a bubble bath to get clean.

Last Papal visit in May of 2009,

I really wanted to see the Pope Mobile,

but Pope Benedict arrived in a regular limo.

Will be interesting to see what will happen this time.
