Yom Ha’atzmaut: Fly Over on Independence Day in Jerusalem

Air space over Jerusalem, Israel is not open,

when planes or helicopters fly over we notice.

The week before Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day

the sounds meant, it was rehearsal time

for the annual flyover air show and time to grab the camera.

On Yom Ha’atzmaut it was very cloudy.

Friends on beach in Tel Aviv had it easier to get a clear view.

But when those planes start flying over in formation,

it is something special to see.

Former Israeli Ambassador to US, Michael Oren (right)

stopped mid-sentence to look to the sky.

A little coloring helped this photo.

There were several flyovers by different types of planes.

In Gan Sacher, Sacher Park, where we were at the time of the show,

by the last set of planes

everyone had found their spot to see and to take a photo.

Israel Independence Day 66!

Ready to Celebrate Israel’s 64th Independence Day

If you are not in Jerusalem this week

you are missing out on a very special time,

as Jerusalem gets ready for Yom Ha’atzmaut, Independence Day.

The weather has been cool and sunny during the day, with clear blue  skies,

"picture for Israel Independence Day","image Israeli bopper", "photo blue and white"

as the streets fill with blue and white Israeli flags.

"picture selling flags", "image Israeli flag", "photo Israeli flag"

At major intersections someone is usually selling flags for car windows.

Even Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu stopped his motorcade to buy a flag.

It is reported that he gave the seller a 5 shekel tip.

I wonder how you report that for taxes?

"picture Israeli flag", " Photo Israel flag", "image flag of Israel"

 As you can see,

in some neighborhoods business has been very good this year.

"picture flag on car, "Image of flag on car","photo Israeli flag on car"

This flag  was one I had not seen before. It reads “God, He is King.”

"picture Israeli flag", "Israeli flag photo", "image Israeli flag"

The long Israeli flags are flying and ready for Independence Day,

but yesterday I was lucky to see…

"photo planes flying over", "picture celebrate Independence Day"

the dress rehearsal of planes as they flew over

"picture Jerusalem", "Photo Jerusalem","image Jerusalem"

the Knesset Building

"picture Jerusalem", "Jerusalem photo", "image Jerusalem museum'

and the Israel Museum.

"photo Jerusalem", "picture Jerusalem", "image Jerusalem"

They were fast, loud and high in the sky as they flew away from Jerusalem.

"picture planes ", "photos planes", "image planes"

There was time for one photo as they were coming towards me,

just before they split from their perfect formation.

This morning, the sad music on the radio has begun…

"Israel flag and flame photo","picture of flame and flag", "image of Israel flag and flame"

for first we will experience the flames  and tears of Yom Hazikaron,

Remembrance Day for the fallen soldiers and victims of terror.

After remembering those lost in war and to terror attacks,

then it will be time to celebrate Israel’s 64th Independence Day.

Outrageous

Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand who is visiting Jerusalem

is recovering from an injury and presently unable to climb stairs.

The grounds of Beit HaNasi, the President’s official residence

are accessible for those with disabilities,

however it is reported that on an official visit she had a difficult time

because of the stairs inside.

Many places in Jerusalem can be difficult if you cannot do steps.

but until a proposed elevator is built,

getting there from the Jewish Quarter requires going down many steps.

Some sidewalks are narrow,

very narrow.

and the central square in the Rova, the Jewish Quarter, are passable,

but too many sidewalks

are blocked,

"image disabled in the street", "photo traffic", "picture handicapped"

or non-existent,

"picture riding in street", "photo handicapped", "image disabled in street"

forcing wheelchairs and similar vehicles into busy streets.

None of this is news in Jerusalem,

for too many restaurants, synagogues and public buildings

are not accessible to the disabled.

"picture Sacher Park", "woman on walker picture", "image handicapped"

In Gan Sacher, Sacher Park, on Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day

when thousands and thousands of people gathered

"picture restrooms", "image bathrooms"

…there were NO additional bathrooms provided.

Those women patient enough to wait in line had to navigate steps.

Some women required assistance,

requiring men in the toilet area to help them in and out of a waiting wheelchair.

Outrageous…

there is no excuse for this situation in the center of Jerusalem!

It may be hard to avoid going in the street in some locations,

"photo wheelchair", "picture tourists in wheel chair", "

but one should not have to be royalty to have their basic needs accommodated.

  Outrageous!

Update: April 17, 2012,

"picture new bus stop","Jerusalem bus photo" , "image bus stop Jerusalem"

New bus stops make walking easier,

now we need better public toilets in Gan Sacher for Yom Ha’atzmaut.
