Jerusalem One Week in July – 9 Events and Fireworks

Jerusalem One Week in July – 9 Events and Fireworks

Once again it was a busy week in Jerusalem, Israel,

a week filled with events I am compelled to share with you.

Let’s see how many of these you heard about.

  1. Last night was another ‘pitch night’ for Jerusalem Biotech startups.

Jerusalem Deputy mayor at JlmBiomed meeting at Azerili college

There are so many innovative new biomedical and tech companies it is hard to keep up. Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum is a regular speaker at Azrieli College for Engineering for JLM-BIOCITY pitch nights.  However, last night twenty Chinese visitors attended this meetup on their last night in Israel before returning home to cities throughout China.

Did they understand all the English?

No, but they took plenty of photos on their phones.

Israeli President Volunteer Awards at Beit Hanasi 2019

2. President Rivlin hosted an awards ceremony to honor twelve volunteers, individuals, and organizations.

While most of the Israeli media was out looking for riots, these young people were singing in the gardens for the Israeli President and invited guests.

The years of volunteerism and the diversity of projects of this honored group filled a souvenir book.

3. Again yesterday at Beit Hanasi, but inside this time, the Jerusalem Unity Prize was given to four groups. Three Israeli projects that promote unity and Moishe House for the diaspora. The award was started 5 years ago by then-Mayor Nir Barkat and the Fraenkel, Shaer, and Ifrach families in memory of their 3 murdered teens to promote the unity the families felt in their time of stress and mourning.

But there were more awards.

Dr Deborah Lipstadt speaking in Jerusalem Israel on antisemitism for Bnai Brith

The keynote speaker was Dr. Deborah Lipstadt who spoke on antisemitism.

She had support in the audience from family members. However, it was a shame many people were afraid to come because of the traffic delays the previous day. Seats were empty in what would have been a standing room only event.

Road construction can cause traffic to stop, but on that night there were no riots or serious delays.

5. The Israel Democracy Institute discussed the US Freedom of Religion report.

Who knew the US State Department has been issuing this report since 1998?

Summer on the streets of Jerusalem, Israel and there are new signs.

6. The “Windows” exhibit in Gan Hasoos, Horse Park is causing buzz way before the Mekudeshet Festival begins in September.

By night, this room was set up, during the day I was not allowed in.

The courtyard was filled with music and people at night for the festival opening events.

During the day the guard did not know what I was looking for.

Keeping children out of school safe and busy was high on families’ lists.

Jerusalem Israel First Station Hangar IDF exhibit

8. The IDF exhibit at First Station is an option. It is not busy in the morning, and you can get a security bracelet to enter on-site, not just online. However, I was not going to stand and wait for ten minutes in the midday sun to go inside when a guard at the door told me I was not allowed to take photos.

Jerusalem Israel Bell Park in summer

9. July 4th was a good time to go to Liberty Bell Park.

Jerusalem Israel Liberty Bell Park

The park was dedicated 43 years ago on the 200th-anniversary celebration of the United States Independence Day.

An exact replica of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is in the center of this Jerusalem park. Yes, with the crack.

This blog is getting too long to share more photos of the Terry Fox and Billy Graham memorial gardens and the many other sections of the Liberty Bell Park.

But in Israel on July 4th, one remembers that forty-three years ago was also Operation Jonathan at Entebbe.

The Yonatan Netanyahu Garden was quiet this year, while a bar mitzvah celebration was held nearby. For the 40th anniversary, there was a major event at the Jerusalem Theater.

What a week it was in Jerusalem, Israel.

Now for the fireworks which you have been waiting for.

For a first, the US Embassy Jerusalem had 4th of July fireworks at its celebration (on July 2nd).

My video on Facebook has had 45 shares and over 8,000 views.

The event was at the International Conference Center, the fireworks could be seen over the Knesset with the Israeli flag in view.

So much happened this week on and over the Jerusalem, Israel streets.

Summer in Jerusalem: Down Pilgrimage Road to Outer Space at Israel Museum

Summer in Jerusalem: Down Pilgrimage Road to Outer Space at Israel Museum

It’s summer.

School is out for the summer. Now, what to do?

The Jerusalem Light Festival in the Old City started on June 26 and ends July 4th.

Israeli dancing begins at First Station on Sunday evenings at 8:00 pm.

Music will play in Kikar Safra, Safra Square for two big night concerts, July 11 – Goran Bregovic and July 25 – Stavros Xsarchakos.

Too classical and late at night? Programs for children are available in community parks.

And of course, many museums are including summer events for families.

In Jerusalem, the Israel Museum is always a go-to place on a hot day.

There are new temporary exhibits, like Peter and Pan.

Then it progresses over the centuries to James Barrie,

Across the hall from Pan to Peter, is another temporary exhibit.

Enter from the Ancient Civilizations section of the Israel Museum,

Rimon took a miniature Torah into outer space, which was destroyed in the explosion. A duplicate miniature Torah was located and is on exhibit. The story of its use during the Shoah in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp for a Bar Mitzvah is next to the display case.

Israel Museum corridor without people

The halls of the Israel Museum are filled all summer, only empty at closing time.

Besides the Israel Museum, there are many events happening.

There is a special exhibit at the Art Shelter where 62 works by 22 artists are for sale, July 9 – 16th.

The Outline Festival – Illustration and Words in Jerusalem is from July 4 – 11th.

For the summer a very different exhibit is on at First Station in the Hangar.

Jerusalem Israel First Station Zahal Shelanu exhibit

When Prime Minister Netanyahu saw Zahal Shelanu in Holon, he said this should be in Jerusalem, Israel, for more to see.

So the special IDF display is at First Station in the Hangar for the summer.

The big equipment is on display outside.

But if you want to get inside, it is only open from 9-5:00 pm.

Special tickets are free but have to be ordered online in advance.

My attempt to go at night for good light was not so bright.

Also this week there was an official opening of the Pilgrimage Road.

It will still be another four years before the public will be able to walk this underground path.

We saw the beginnings of the project two years ago.

More on the story from then HERE.

The Wine Festival is coming next week, so that means the beer festival should be soon after.

Tower of David sunset view inside

There is a new Happy Hour on Monday evenings in July at the Tower of David.

Enjoy the views with a glass of wine!

As always so much happening on the Jerusalem streets.

It’s summer. It’s hot. But even in the dried weeds of summer one can find beauty.

Jerusalem 2019 Light Festival in Old City

Jerusalem 2019 Light Festival in Old City

The annual Jerusalem Light Festival is once again lighting up the walls of the Old City.

Every year I try and go early to get into position for photos at sunset.

The lights were just getting going near the end of the Blue route.

Jerusalem Light Festival

‘Choosing Mildness’ would be more vivid after dark.

Jerusalem Light Festival sign

For each installation, a sign was posted with details.

Thankfully I took photos of a few signs.

A very nice young man in a security vest offered me his map, only the text was in Arabic!

So the first piece of advice, start at the beginning of the routes and do not go in reverse as I did.

Light Festival Jerusalem Israel

I could not find the last art piece #17 on the Blue Route. Due to security for an event on Thursday night, it was not open on Wednesday as well.

Jerusalem Light Festival in Old City

The next to last piece, #16 ‘Trumpet Flowers,’ was ready to go.

Light Festival in Jerusalem

This year the Blue Route goes on the outside of the old city walls from Jaffa Gate to Dung Gate. But beware if you do the route in reverse it can get confusing.

Jerusalem Light Festival

Lights and people dressed in lights were popular this year.

Near Jaffa Gate, as it got dark the blue lights were easy to follow.

More actors dressed in lights were near Jaffa Gate.

This was one of my favorite photographs.

However, since I cannot read Arabic, I am not sure what it is.

Jerusalem lights on Damascus Gate

The lights on Damascus Gate were interesting near the end of the Green Route.

They changed, but too slowly for a good video.

I had forgotten just how amazing was the masterpiece from five years ago.

Light festival in Jerusalem old city walls

Here was one interactive Green Route attraction aimed to interest children.

This was my fourth attempt to take a video here.

Families kept walking by and posing for photos.

‘Street Flowers’ was a popular overhead attraction.

Light Festival in Old City Jerusalem

The streets in the Arab market are always an interesting photo op.

The shops themselves are colorful when well lit.

‘Call for a Wish’ needed a video better than a photograph.

Muristan Square with French light artist Jerusalem light festival

Lucky this year, instead of getting lost in the Christian Quarter, as usual, I met the artist of #17 Blue Route at Muristan Square. Mr. Franck was free to wander as his special piano will not be on display until next week.

People taking photos at Jerusalem light festival

By the time I got to the light tunnel crowds were building.

You should be seeing many photos and videos of this attraction.

Jerusalem light festival shops in Arab shuk open at night

More shops were open in the Arab shuk than in the past.

It got so crowded in some places, I had to hold my camera over my head and push through the crowd trying hard not to fall on the uneven stone streets.

Jerusalem Light festival near Jaffa Gate

I finished the Red Route back at the plaza by Jaffa Gate.

Jerusalem light festival wall near Jaffa Gate

The photo of the walls outside Jaffa Gate was not the usual lovely image.

But it seems this ‘Dance Party’ was just getting started as I was leaving.

This year there was no route that went through the Jewish Quarter.

Remember last year’s beautiful ‘Rainbow’ on the Hurva Synagogue?

I am considering going back next week to check out my new friend’s piano in Davidson Archeological Park.

Equipment for Jerusalem light festival

This was the serious equipment aimed at the walls near the end of the Blue Route.

Jerusalem 2019 Light Festival runs from June 26 to July 4th.

It has been a while since I did over a 3-hour walk.

Make sure you wear good shoes.

Festival of Light in Jerusalem

Let me know what you think of the Festival of Light in Jerusalem if you go.

There’s much more happening in Jerusalem, Israel this week, but enough for now.
