Hanukkah Holiday Lights

For the eight days of Hanukkah,

so many lights were burning brightly,

menorah

from the olive oil flames of the religious yeshiva hanukkiot,

to the large electric candelabra

Hanukah 024b

at the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem,

across the road from each other.

Many stores and restaurants had candles lit,

inside or in the windows for all to see.

This one Emek Refaim Street was hard to miss.

What was missing were the large numbers tourists

usually around this time of year.

A little Photoshop was needed to fix this photo,

electric menorah as street decorations

as those street light hanukkiot were hanging in fewer locations

and often not all of their parts were working.

However,

menorah on Emek Refaim

there was no shortage of Chabad hanukkiot

on street corners,

Chabad chaunka menorah on car

and on top of cars.

One favorite was the large hanukkia burning brightly

Gush Chabad chanukia

at the Tzomet HaGush bus stop,

recently the scene of too many terrorist attacks.

The major annual hanukkiot were

and inside near the Kotel, the Western Wall.

A friend reports that new pink spot light was removed

by the end of the holiday.

This new one in town was my favorite.

The lights on the Old City Walls

were of s’vivonim, dreydles, games and fun.

Of course, the holiday foods and parties were on going.

This BBQ in the Archaeological Park of Old City,

fed hundreds of the security personnel who stand out in the cold

day and night protecting us from the next terror attack.

And there was music,

from a show at the new Arena Stadium,

as well as thousands of family gatherings and community events.

The lights and sounds of Hanukkah

came forth from Jerusalem.

For those who were afraid to walk the streets this year,

next year in Jerusalem, Israel.

No matter how you spell it,

חנוכה or Chanukah,

is a special time you should not miss.

Jerusalem Darkness to Light

From Jerusalem will come forth light,

from the Jerusalem light festivals  to Hannukah lights,

it is an old, if not ancient theme.

However, this week we saw some unique lights.

Those red, white and blue lights on the Walls of the Old City

Knesset lit at night flag at half mast

and on the Knesset building, where the Israeli flag flew at half mast.

After Shabbat, the flag was lowered

to symbolize the link with France after the terror attack in Paris.

Israeli flags over Beit Hanasi were lowered as well,

French flags in Jerusalem

while French flags were unfurled over major Jerusalem streets.

I found it ironic that new signs were posted

for a new App for Jerusalem night life–

who knows what will happen next?

When I see new signs like this one,

I snap photos of them,

video production on streets

only after did I realize, it was posted for the filming of a TV movie.

Make sure you know whether what you see is real or not.

The Jerusalem municipality posted hundreds of large and small signs

asking MK Kahlon “Do not forsake Jerusalem”

in the new budget in the Knesset.

This week in Jerusalem, while the weather is cool,

Jerusalem roses bloom in November

the roses are blooming

and the oranges are ripening.

However, I want to share

one other very special light coming out of the darkness.

My friend Varda wrote of the horrific terror attack last erev Shabbat.

We know the Rav of Meitar and his family,

and we have many friends there and visit occasionally.

We have driven the road from Meitar to Otniel.

Such darkness,

to drive to a simcha and get ambushed by murderers.

But, from Jerusalem, came forth light.

On Tuesday night, in the wedding hall,

at the time the wedding of the daughter of the victim was to take place,

hall for wedding

an overflow crowd of women and girls

filled the hall with prayer and music, and words of unity.

The Litman-Beigel wedding is rescheduled for next week,

and this time everyone is invited.

Am Yisrael Chai!

May lights continue to come forth from Jerusalem

to shine and inspire the world.

14 Favorite Hanukkah Lights

Hanukkah in Jerusalem, Israel, can be exhausting!

Candle lighting ceremonies seem to be everywhere,

with people arriving from all over the world.

afterwards I was stopped by an over-anxious guard.

Thankfully, he did not try to delete my photos.
