Remembering Tomorrow 2011

It is too hot to be outside.

The news of more terror attacks from Egypt are distressing.

The reports of the Egyptian presidential results are depressing.

The fourth Israeli Presidential Conference – Facing Tomorrow 2012,

opens at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem tomorrow.

So today seemed like a good time to remember last year’s conference.

At the opening press conference President Shimon Peres called Shakira

“Sharika”…I still have to stop and think, so as not to repeat the mistake.

"picture Sarah Silverman", "photo Sarah Silverman", "image Sarah Silverman"

On the opening night, Sarah Silverman stole the show,

showing that she was a comedian with brains.

"picture Jonathon Sacks'" ,"photo Rabbi Sacks","image Chief Rabbi Sacks"

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks called anti-Semitism a virus:

the oldest virus of hate that is spread today by the internet.

"photo Rabbi Sacks", "image chief rabbi Sacks", "picture J Sacks"

“Holocaust happens when language debases happenings,” he warned.

History shows hate begins with Jews, but it does not end with them.

A year later his words are even more insightful.

"picture Peres", "image Pres Peres",

I spotted President Shimon Peres more than once

moving quickly from session to session.

"picture Jimmy Wales", "photo Jimmy Wales", Image Jimmy Wales"

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales was a featured speaker.

It is still distressing to me that some Arabic entries found in Wikipedia,

are very different from the English ones.

In Arabic, the only connection of the Jews to the “Wailing Wall”

is that they tried to buy it twice and failed.

"photo Dr Ruth", "image Doctor Ruth", "picture Dr Ruth'

Popular ‘Dr Ruth’ Westheimer often got stopped in the halls.

She is on the schedule again this year.. and yes, she really is short.

"picture lab students', photo HU students", "image lab coats'

A favorite of mine were the students from the Hebrew University labs.

Those doing studies on the blind loved to show

their sensor invention that makes a walking stick obsolete.

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu was one

of the speakers at the conclusion of the conference.

At some popular sessions there were lines waiting to enter,

and once inside the room there was standing room only.

Lucky for me Mohammad Dajani got up and walked out

"photo Nir Barkat", "image Jerusalem mayor'. Picture mayor Jerusalem"

when Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat spoke of his vision for Jerusalem,

so I got a seat in the crowded room.

Facing Tomorrow… more on Tomorrow 2012 tomorrow.

Jerusalem in June

June in Jerusalem…the days are hot,

"picture boy", "image bike helmet", "photo child helmet"

everyone seems to be moving a little slower

and taking a break for an ice cream or a cold drink.

"picture school crossing" , "photo school crossing", "image girls"

School crossing guards are being trained for the next school year.

Before school lets out for the summer and the kids are home,

"picture conference", "Photo women", "image Kishor"

the Kishor Women’s Business Networking conference

"picture women", "image ladies conference", "photo Kishor conference"

attracted 350 business women from all over Israel to the Ramada Hotel.

Making the summer plans for children is a big headache this time of year.

"fruit stand photo", "picture fruit", "image fruit'

While the abundance of summer fruit in season is a pleasure.

The Jerusalem Light Festival has been a big success this year,

if you missed it,

"picture Damascus Gate", "photo Damascus Gate", "image Damascus Gate"

Damascus Gate as a giant pinball machine was a popular attraction.

Gan haPa’amon, the Liberty Bell Park, was full every evening

for the annual Shavua Ha’sefer  HaIvri, the Hebrew Book Week.

"picture shavuah hasefer", "photo shavuah hasefer", "image Shavuah hasefer"

Families came to look at children’s books

"pictrure shavuah hasefer,", 'photo shavuah Hasefer", Image book week"

and sat on the grass enjoying the entertainment.

"picture shavuah hasefer", "photo buying books", "image book week"

Religious books,

"picture book fair", "image book week", "photo books sellers"

university publications,

"picture shavuah hasefer", "photo book week", Image shavuah hasafer"

and all kinds of books are on sale in the park until June 16.

"image security", "photo book sale", "picture shavuah hasefer"

Security was obvious, perhaps more so than in the past.

Protesters getting ready for more rallies for social justice

are getting headlines,

but there is so much more happening in Jerusalem.

Once again the annual and popular

Season of Culture and the Israel Festival

will offer dozens of cultural events

to thousands of people from all over the world.

And one thing everyone hopes for…

it will stay cool in the evenings.

How to Understand the Middle East in 2 Minutes

Things can change in the Middle East in a minute or a day

or as seen in the Arab Spring in Egypt and Syria…

one can never predict the timing of change.

Last week in Jerusalem a few things caught my attention

that you may have missed.

The media gave much attention to Palestinian hunger strikers,

but in the open area near the Israeli Supreme Court,

"picture tent" , "photo hunger strike tent", "Image protest tent"

there was a tent for another hunger strike, by those who supported a law

against destroying the Ulpana houses of Beit El.

"picture ohel", "photo hunger stride", "image hunger strike tent"

On Sunday MK Daniel Hershkowitz arrived with his security team.

"picture Daniel Hershkowitx", "photo Daniel Herschkowitz", "image MK Hershkowtiz"

First he chatted with the “settler activists” working in the tent

"picture Hershkowitz and Katz", Photo Knesset members", "image Israel politicians"

and had a discussion with MK  Yaakov Katz, known as Katzeleh.

"picture Hershkowtiz" , Image hunger strike tent", "photo table protesters"

Then MK Hershkowitz, the Minister of Science and Technology,

sat and spoke to the crowd.

But on Wednesday, after talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,

he did not vote for the bill and thus kept his job as minister.

The politics involved are way too complicated for me to explain.

Also on Wednesday, at Ofer Military Prison,

there was another trial for Shchada Aved Shchada Shata.

He has been convicted of stealing the gun from Asher Palmer‘s body.

Shchada stopped his car, climbed down from the highway

to reach the site where the car had crashed and stole the dead man’s gun.

He is a 47-year-old father of eight with sick relatives,

who wants compassion from the court,

though he showed none at the time of the crime.

In contrast, a Israeli military court had previously permitted

"photo Asher Palmer", "picture Michael Palmer", " Israel Palestinian"

Palmer supporters to hold photos of Asher and Yonatan,

the infant son who was in the car and also died in the crash

at the trial of those who threw the large rock from a moving car,

but not at this past Wednesday hearing.

Michael Palmer, the victims’ father and grandfather was allowed

to enter a written statement as a victim of terror.

Meanwhile back in Jerusalem,

"picture German flag",. "photo German flag", "image flag Germany"

the German flag was still flying after the visit of the

President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Joachim Gauck.

President Gauck thinks the problem in the Middle East is the “settlers,”

wonder if he ever reads Khaled Abu Toameh?

"picture Jerusalem", "photo flags in Jerusalem", "image flags"

As they were taking down the German and Israeli flags,

"Jerusalem Park image", "picture Palestinians Jerusalem", "photo Jerusalem Arabs"

this Arab family was enjoying an outing in the park below,

"picture Jerusalem", :"photo Jerusalem", "image wreath"

near a memorial and wreath in memory of the bus bombing

on February 22, 2004 where 8 Jews were killed.

Understand the Middle East in 2 minutes?

… impossible.
